When Rodgers and Hammerstein discovered a shared interest in Green Grow the Lilacs, a romantic drama set in nineteenth-century Indian Territory, they left their earlier partners to recast the play as a musical. Oklahoma! won tremendous applause and ran on Broadway for over two thousand performances, the spectacular beginning of a beautiful relationship.
